The Job Seeker’s Resolution Guide

As the year and the decade has come to an end, it’s time to start thinking about the opportunities that the new year can bring.

For job seekers, it can mean starting a new job, transitioning into a new industry, or going after that promotion.

Are you looking to make a change in your career in 2020? Use our job seeker’s resolution guide to set and achieve your employment goals next year.

Write Down Your Career Goals

We all have career goals: some of us want to land a dream job while others hope to transition into a new field. Whatever your goals, you need to write them down.

According to neuroscientists, you have a much better chance of achieving your goals if you can write them down and explain them clearly.

So, if you want to make 2020 the year that you leap into a better job, get it down on paper ASAP.

Update Your Resume

When was the last time you updated your resume? If you can’t remember, then now is the time.

Be sure to not only doublecheck your work history but also update any skills you added since you last looked at it. Remember that skills aren’t just something you build at work: soft skills are equally as valuable to employers are your technical abilities.

Learn New Skills

Change is happening all around us, including in your industry. Whether you are a new hire or industry vet, new skills are emerging that everyone needs to succeed.

Stand out from the crowd by learning them now. Pursuing skill development shows employers that you understand your industry and that you are committed to learning throughout your career.

Don’t forget to list those new items on your resume!

Embrace the Power of Digital Profiles

For many of us, the traditional paper resume is still the way to apply for jobs. But to leave digital job profiles behind might be a mistake, no matter what your industry is.

A digital profile, like LinkedIn, is a chance to differentiate yourself from the competition in a way that’s hard to achieve on a typical paper resume. However, you also need to take your profile seriously. An incomplete profile can hurt your chances of landing a job.

Dedicate a few hours during the January lull to improving your digital presence, and you might see a job opportunity fall into your lap in 2020.

What Are Your Goals for 2020?

The end of the year is a great time to take stock of what you achieved over the past 365 days and where you hope to go. To reach your professional goals, you need a plan, and these resolutions can help you get there.
